WHO Storage Cabinet and Divider
Description
The WHO Cabinet is a large solid oak storage cabinet designed to function both as a wall cabinet and as a freestanding room divider. The design reflects modernist storage systems developed between the 1930s and 1950s, where shelving, cabinets, and open planes were organized into layered architectural compositions.
Sliding doors, open shelving, and cantilevered elements divide the cabinet into three sections: an upper hutch, open central shelves, and a lower console with concealed storage.
The circular cutouts in the front doors form a geometric motif that continues on the back of the cabinet through an embossed round panel. Because the rear surface is fully finished, the cabinet can stand freely in a room and function as a divider between spaces.
Materials & Construction
The frame and body are constructed from solid oak and finished in Modern Oak multi-step lacquer by Akzo Nobel.
An optional two-tone version is available with the upper hutch doors finished in Ancient Forest lacquer, a deep olive tone inspired by mid-century furniture palettes.
Sliding doors operate on aluminum tracks with routed finger pulls. The lower console doors include tempered reeded glass panels that partially obscure stored objects while allowing light to pass through.
Cantilevered center shelves are secured with bolted steel hardware for structural support.
The rear panel is fully finished and includes an embossed circular detail that mirrors the front door cutouts, allowing the cabinet to function as a freestanding room divider.
Internal structural components use engineered plywood panels to reduce wood movement and prevent splitting over time. Solid mahogany cleats reinforce internal joinery.
Crafted in Indonesia by furniture makers experienced in solid hardwood construction.
